Open for Business: The Milkbarn Kitchen

Our Milkbarn kitchen is complete!
Well, almost...

Because nothing is truly done when you build or remodel your own home with your own hands.
Our hands are getting pretty tired (:
and we just want to take a break!

We went for GE slate appliances.
I've had enough of stainless.
Four kids means like 57 fingerprints on it daily.
I can't go there.
So the slate is my first choice, plus I believe in magnets.
Magnets are a must.
Every kid needs to see you like their artwork or quiz or paper or tiny notes saying, "dear Mom".

This is a Delta fixture I purchased online.
We went with a giant stainless steel under-mount single basin sink. I LOVE it.
It hides dirty dishes really, really well.

I fell for this tile we used for our back splash.
We purchased it from Daltile. I mean, I could not live without it. It's bone colored and it costs way too much but the labor is cheap so you know....sold!

My sister Marcie told me I needed to buy a light fixture that seemed like jewelry for the room. She turned me on to a couple of websites that were just so hip and cool.
Dot and Bow was one of them. Check them out!
Instead,  I kept looking at this Restoration Hardware piece.
I got sick of looking at it and bought it.
I get sick of myself a lot.
Best decision.
All the textures and materials were working between the slate, the steel on the light, the cream and our counter top.

I went with a quartz counter top called Delicatus Ice.
The more I look at it, the more I like it each day. It ties in the cabinetry we bought at Lowes. The cabinets are a shaker style, "Dover" on top and "Storm" on the bottom.
When we first talked about the kitchen,  I wanted white.
White all the way. I was not budging.
Dreamy dreamy white.
And then as we lived in the space(gross version of the Milkbarn) and I took our house on as a designer rather than a woman who only wanted a white kitchen...my mind expanded and I needed something that would flow and look organic in the space we were creating.
So I put the kibosh on that white kitchen.
This is what we came up with.

I chose some oval shaped dark bronze knobs for the cabinets to soften all those angles out.

Bin pulls for the lower cabinets

We did a crown molding on the cabinets to give the kitchen a nice finished look. It does make a difference!

Can you see magnets on the side?

The unfinished backsplash!
But the counter top makes up for it.

More unfinished business...

A week of living in it, not so styled now (:

The view over my kitchen sink.
We're putting the kibosh on those sheds too next summer.

A look back on what we have done...

this extra seating does have a certain
 remodeling ambiance

Upon move in (pre - horror plumbing story)
Our old bedroom,
transformed into the kitchen we adore!

First meal in the new kitchen.
Everyone looks like they really wanted that celebratory photograph.

We did celebrate!
We hung up our Christmas lights with Grandma and Grandpa in town
 for a Thanksgiving break visit.

Clay made a plethora of pies.
Banana Cream was in the fridge.

Setting the table for Thanksgiving.
I should get place mats or chargers, that table looks a little naked....now I get why they are so unnecessarily necessary.

Clay smoked a turkey, this was the best foodie shot I got.
Uh, smoked meat doesn't photograph well but it was delish.

We had 19 total for dinner. So in other words,
we baptized this kitchen!
Grandma and Grandpa, good friends, super cousins
and my Aunt Joan.
It was wonderful!

Maret taught me how to use this ridiculous option on my phone
for photos.

The day after we took Grandma to the Boulder Ballet Nutcracker performance. It was cold and snowy and it was magical.

We are going to take a little break for Christmas,
maybe LEGO Clay can get some work done.
Let's all slow down and enjoy the season!
and thank you for following this journey with us...we aren't done yet!

Audrey Graduates!

And just like that, she is done with high school! A couple of days before, I had her try on all the cords she received. We have lovingly teased her about being a boss lady for quite sometime, but it is a legitimate moniker! I think she was pleased to have more cords than her older siblings too:) Cords and what they represent: white-Seminary graduate red- Red Cross club rainbow- art for 2+ years with an A purple-maintaining a 4.0 GPA for 7+ semesters blue & green- completing 200+ service hours blue & gold- National Honor Society club She decorated her cap as a future cougar:) Still planning her outfits out since kindergarten and I love it. Picking up the older kids the day of her graduation...haha Our go-to Hawaiian plate lunch meal for graduation! 💗Ready to go💗 Aunt Marcie flew in for the best surprise visit!  She made it memorable for everyone.  And served as our graduation photographer. If I hadn't been so busy, I would have cried upon her arrival💗 Cougar for life! It

London Layovers

This post is going backwards because this is one of the last photos I took in London before we went home.  I was also feeling very sick but adrenaline kicked in....because hello, it's LONDON ! I completely loved London.  I wasn't expecting that at all.  I thought I'd like it but I LOVED it.   I'm already calculating when I can go back with the girls:) Our charter bus from the cruise dropped us at Heathrow 7 hours early and the airline attendant when checking our bags noted that we  "were quite early" :) So we hopped on the Elizabeth Line and walked over to Hyde Park. It was full of friends, and dogs off leash with their owners, families...just everything. It just felt perfect. Like, was this real? Am I in a movie? Are these accents real? Oh wait...I'm the one with the accent:)  ( Remember, I have never really traveled outside of the the country and now the pandoras box of traveling is officially open...okay,  I digress...) Anyway, back to our afternoon  i

We Are Officially Building That House!

And....we're off! First concrete pour was a success Along with a crew involving other people outside  of our humble brigade! This is the garage floor which really should be called  Clay's shop floor haha let's be honest here :) the mastermind at hand :) ten years ago we took this photo upon our move into the Milkbarn, the home that changed me, changed all of us really. What an era that was for us! I mentioned to Clay as we build our home here on the coast,  my heart will finally mend from leaving Boulder. We are much older(sigh),  much wiser(that's good!),  and even more patient(almost killed us and we wanted to quit too many times to count). But here we are.  The immense joy we get when we work together creatively is really something else. It's taken us forever. The pieces are fitting together. God definitely took his time with us. And now...we're back :) (p.s. most of what we'll do will be in my stories section on my instagram @jenniferjoycolli
