The Original Bathroom It actually doesn't look that bad. We used it for about 9 days after moving in last fall until the toilet/ shower/sink backed up. Clay investigated the plumbing in the crawl space. It was horrendous. He said the pipes were like cardboard and just a mess. And the really wonderful discovery; pinholes throughout all the pipes. He worked avoiding poo for over 2 weeks under the house which already had mud and muck from the September floods. We lived at our friends home for those weeks. Thank you Kalle and Paul. And showered elsewhere like the gym! Or strategically used public bathrooms when grocery shopping! I hope none of you will ever have to live through a plumbing disaster of this magnitude. I laughed nervously and tried to see the good. Like the view from my bathroom-less home. But, I also smelled and was kind of depressed. |
The bathroom that never worked. We have another tiny bathroom to use off a room we sleep in. It has a sliding door. It's like an airplane bathroom or maybe a motor home bathroom at best. I hit my elbows somewhere on the wall or shelf everyday. I just can't bring myself to show a photo of it. It's gross. But we aren't above gross. I can't complain. |
Poor Chester. So, we really needed this bathroom done. I present Exhibit A above. This isn't the first time Chester has relieved himself outside. Apparently this is happening all the time. I finally figured out when his tee shirts are haphazardly tucked into his basketball shorts, he's gone outside. He's a problem solver. |
prepping the walls for texture Clay is applying Plasterweld. It only comes in pink. I feel like the President of Plasterweld is a southern belle who owns a shotgun. Anyways, this allows the plaster to bond to the wall. |
Prepping the sinks |
Plumbers putty is fun! |
Work complete Chester applied the plumbers putty to the tailpiece of whatever part to get the sink ready. Man, I am not good at this. |
Veneer Plaster |
My artist Veneer plaster being applied. Looks good! |
November Rain I wrote a whole blog post on how I chose this color for the house. It disappeared and honestly, I couldn't get it back for the life of me. An omen perhaps? Guess what, looks good in the bathroom and the girls room but nowhere else. The lighting in the Milkbarn changes so much from room to room. A first world problem for sure...finding the right paint for each room to keep the home flowing. |
Tile I chose a 4 X 16 white tile for the bath/shower from Daltile. Clay played with the idea of designing it vertically. It works and I love it!(as much as anyone can really love a piece of tile...maybe I love it because we just have a shower, and I really like being clean. So, the tile is okay and I'm using the word love too much.) |

Door handle beauty. We coupled the shaker style door with bronze oval hardware by Schlage. It pops on the white and softens all the angles of the trim we'll do throughout the house and on the doors. |
Double Vanity After deciding we had no time to build a vanity(have you seen the price of vanities? insanity!), I went with a double pedestal look. Boys on the right, girls on the left. The sink is nothing too fancy, Kohler from Home Depot. We had a mirror cut, 41 1/2 x 47 inches. It's there now but not in this photo. |
Pootery Barn Pottery Barn isn't my style necessarily but I am a huge fan of their hardware and bedding. I just wanted bath hooks for the kid's towels. It's so incredibly dry here. Towel bars are just not necessary. And that relieves any kind of OCD towel positioning I might have. Don't pretend you don't know what I'm talking about. |
Awkward toilet photo. |
Wainscoting. This truly is Clay's specialty. Henry helped him a little bit. He matched the design of the door with the wainscot. He is very clever indeed. |
Our doors I have a crush on these doors. Is that so wrong? |
Another Pootery Barn piece Sconces from Pottery Barn. I know. Average. I can like average! |
Kohler Faucet. Gold towel. |
Bathroom accessories After looking at tumblers for toothbrushes( which is the dumbest thing I think I did last week), I was bored and annoyed. So, I just got some mason jars out. I can just wash them in the dishwasher when the muck gets on the bottom of it. Oh yeah, I don't have a dishwasher yet. Little known fact about me, I have only had a dishwasher 2 out of 22 years of my adult life. I welcome it's upcoming presence in the home far more than piglets! I know. Selfish.
More mason jars for stuff.

Built in shelves! We love built ins! Clay had a frustrating time doing this one. It was a gross closet but now looks clean and fresh. Like farmhouse fresh. And speaking of farms..... |
And the work begins.
See you Tuesday night Anders!
P.S. couple of cute photo's for the books.
Work? Play? Praying?
Chester turning an ancient concrete mixer.
2nd Grade Circus make-up. She was a tumbler.
Dinner picnic when it was 70 degrees Friday night.
FYI, it's snowing right now.
Oh please.
Jen, I love everything about this. You make me laugh. Also, I'm crushing hard on those doors!
ReplyDeleteOh Jennifer. I can't wait to see it. I approve that rockin bathroom. I also like the pootery barn. I think I'll call or that from now on.
ReplyDeleteIt's looking great. Clay's got a lot of skills, and you've got the patience to match. We remodeled the house we bought here. It takes a lot of both to see it through but the end results are so nice! Keep your posts coming, the kids look like they are enjoying the adventure.
ReplyDeleteI'm a regular reader. You downplay the style of your home and of course you are so wrong. Everything looks so elegant and far from plain. You are both very talented and great parents. I admire you both. Say hi to everyone for me. See you soon. Brad K.
